Proposal Checklist

When it comes to planning a marriage proposal, it’s hard to know where to start. There are many details to cover from the moment you decide ‘it’s time’ to the celebratory glass of champagne and everything in-between. To make things a little easier, we’ve compiled a ‘Proposal Checklist’ to assist you in your planning.

1. Know the Answer

You should have a good indication that you are both on the same page when it comes to marriage. The topic of getting married should come up at some point or another throughout your relationship. Discussions about the future together are good indicators that you see eye-to-eye on a long-term future together.

2. Ask Her Parents

Though this may be old-school, some people still believe that the parents’ permission is a meaningful step in the proposal process. Her parents will appreciate the gesture and your soon-to-be fiancé will be happy that you involved her parents in this relationship milestone.

3. The Ring

When looking for the perfect ring, consider her style and the type of jewelry she wears regularly. If she typically doesn’t wear much jewelry, go for something simple. If you have any doubts, check her social media sites, such as Pinterest. There is a good chance she has a board dedicated to engagement rings and wedding ideas (if you don’t find rings on her social media, refer to step 1). Another way to get a better idea of rings she may like is to ask a close friend or family member. If you go this route, however, keep the number of people involved to a minimum to avoid ruining the surprise. If you aren’t sure about her ring size, try to borrow a ring of hers to take to the jeweler. Make sure the ring you measure is one that is for her ring finger on her left hand.

4. The Details

After you’ve purchased the ring and asked her parents for permission, it’s time to start planning the details of your proposal. It does not need to be expensive or extravagant, but it should be original. It’s also important to keep in mind that most women don’t want to be proposed to in front of a large crowd at YOUR favorite sporting event. When deciding on a location, consider returning to a place that is meaningful to your relationship. If you want to capture the moment, hire a secret photographer or friend to take pictures of the proposal.

5. Practice Your “Speech”

It’s a good idea to practice what you are going to say in your proposal a few times before you actually do it. No need to write an extensive speech, just tell her what you love about her and why you want to spend the rest of your life with her.

6. Manicure

Many women will want to take a ‘ring selfie’ after the proposal, so as a courtesy be sure her nails are done. Send her to the salon for a spa day treat to ensure that her hands are photo ready to show off that beautiful ring you bought her. If you think this may spoil the surprise, ask a friend to take her instead!

7. Take a Knee

You may not have known it then, but all those times in pee-wee football that you were asked to take a knee, you were practicing for this big moment. Though this should be expected, many modern proposals don’t involve this romantic gesture. Call us old-fashioned, but that’s how most women have imagined being proposed to since they were little girls. You can blame the romance movies for this one, but don’t spoil her fairytale proposal.

8. Celebrate!

After the speech, the ring, the tears, and the “Yes;” celebrate with each other or close friends and family before taking to social media to tell the world. If it’s just the two of you, make sure you tell your closest friends and family members before posting any engagement photos. The last place they want to hear about your engagement is on Instagram.
